Diversity in Music is key. Originality and innovation are the objectives. Duffrey’s newest project, “Kiss Cupboard” is not lacking in any of these categories. This 4-piece potpourri of majestic mid-tempo mischief properly accentuates Duffrey’s range and his ability to manipulate bass in a way that is both boisterously thought-provoking and comfortably danced to. Any of the four pieces that make up this project do justice to solitary home-listening as well as the dancefloor.

The opening track, “Oxytocin” thoroughly familiarizes you with Duffrey’s sound - a variety of alluring percussion work, kaleidoscopically technical glitch tones, and exquisitely written piano compositions. The overall psychedelic feel of the piece isn’t overwhelming - it’s got a smooth, laid-back progression, with the occasional leap into the abstract through precisely peppered-in drum adjustment. This one is a head-bobber for sure.

“Moist” switches gears a bit with a slower tempo, a minimalist drum development, and the addition of brass. The staccato-like evolution of the horns provides an overall enigmatic atmosphere to this tune, and the faint vocal sample paired with the jubilant tones towards the end contribute to this tune’s shroud of mystery.

Paresthesia is defined as an abnormal sensation, such as a tingling or prickling feeling. The third track is named after the phenomena, and within 20 seconds its pretty clear why. This beautiful cacophony of a track is delightfully abstruse - almost esoteric, and induces a kind of stimulatory stupor for the appendages. Translation: Limbs on Linguini.

“Molasses Jacuzzi” has a clear reggae influence to it, with an up-strummed guitar and a simplistic yet well-constructed drum line. This track is perhaps the most glitch-filled of the four, with bass that purrs like a sleeping kitten and whirring and clicking noises that snap them neurons back in action.

Here's what it comes down to - “Kiss Cupboard” is a delectable collection of mind-bending hymns that arouse the senses and further explore the unfathomable frontier that is Electronic Music.
